Posture Lab
The Practical + Functional Anatomy of Downward Facing Dog (Parts 1 & 2)
at Yogis & Yoginis in Park Slope, Brooklyn
Downward Facing Dog is a familiar yoga posture; it's often assumed to be fully understood. In reality, the coordination of muscle and joint actions required to perform it safely and repeatedly is fairly nuanced.
In this two-part workshop, we’ll break the posture down in a clear, practical way.
Part One
Sunday August 23, 2 - 4 pm
The upper body: how to use the arms effectively and stabilize the shoulders in an overhead, weight-bearing position. Through mobility drills for the shoulders and wrist, we’ll explore the anatomical and movement principles that support a stable, sustainable shape.
Part Two
Sunday, August 30, 2 -4 pm
The lower body: examining how to develop intelligent isometric engagement from the feet through the hips. When the legs are working properly, they help offload the shoulders and allow the spine to lengthen more freely. Combined with upper body stability, this creates a sense of steadiness in the posture, which supports a more integrated practice.
At any level of yoga experience, this workshop will give you a practical approach to refining your Downward Dog. You’ll learn applicable anatomy and joint actions to improve stability and strength, as well as repeatable conditioning routines to develop a more integrated, sustainable practice.
Space is limited to 12 people
$ 80 per session / $150 for both sessions
Early bird to Sunday, August 16
$75 per session / $135 for both sessions

Regulating the Breath & Mind:
An Introduction to Yogic Pranayama
Changing how you breathe can change how you feel, think, and sleep. Pranayama, breathing practices, provides us with techniques to calm anxiety, sharpen focus, and restore balance to the nervous system. The yogic texts outline surprisingly accessible and impactful ways to control the breath to give you the ability to regulate the body while clearing and focusing the mind. Over four 90 minute classes, we will cover the pranayama techniques outlined in The Hatha Yoga Pradipika, one of the most influential yogic texts. Each week will be cumulative, allowing you to integrate and understand each step in building a sustainable, personal practice.
